The transition from an expansionist worldview to a sustainable and caring worldview is the biggest challenge facing humanity today. This transition will not be easy and the 1% will resist, yet it is absolutely necessary for the well-being of our planet and future generations.
We are at pivotal point in human history. The next major phase in the evolution of humankind is just beginning. It involves the transition from the 5,000 year-old worldview of expansionism — controlled by elitists and based on never-ending growth and consumption — to a new worldview of sustainability and caring, potentially controlled by humanity. This transition may prove to be the defining issue of the 21st century.
The sustainable and caring worldview is gaining momentum, building on solid support from progressives, scientists, young people, indigenous groups and many developing and northern European nations. The Arab spring, Occupy movement and student unrest of 2011 all revealed an outrage towards the biased systems and decision-making by the 1%. Decisions that bailed them out and protected their wealth while crippling the global economy and ignoring the needs of the young, the poor and the environment. The “we are the 99%” slogan of the Occupy movement acts as a global rallying cry for humantiy to unite against the greed and biased decision-making of the 1%.
